Teaching Grammar with Games to Children in an EFL Classroom
Teaching grammar through games is one of the most important tools that a teacher has in the EFL-classroom. EFL stands for English as a Foreign Language i.e. where students have the subject English as a foreign language. The methods of teaching English grammar to these children are different than those who have ESL (English as a Secondary Language). Games are a natural way of children’s learning process. You can teach anything such as foreign languages, mathematics, environmental science, etc. to children with the help of games. As a teacher, you will need to create a friendly atmosphere in the classroom, which is fun and relaxing. Research has shown that it is necessary to play games in EFL classrooms because games provide a meaningful context for the learners. It also helps in enhancing students´ activity and involvement in learning a language.

Methods of Using Grammar Games in an EFL Classroom
While you are teaching the children, they have already learned the vocabulary to an extent along with some topics such as numbers, colours, talking about yourself, objects, places, animals, etc. introduce some new prepositions to using objects that such as pens, books, etc. Let the children copy these prepositions which will help them to remember and understand their meanings. Show again where necessary and continue until most of the children remember and are able to tell five or six of the prepositions. You must not continue until every single child knows all of the prepositions.
Learning Countable and Uncountable Nouns
Children often find it difficult to identify countable and uncountable nouns. For this reason, you need to teach them through a couple of customized games and among these a popular one is the shopping game.
Ask children to collect several pictures and packages of goods that have been bought from shops: e.g. milk boxes, chocolate wrapping paper, etc. They need to label them at home with their respective English words, for example, put a label on a bottle of milk saying ‘milk’, a box of cake as ‘cake’ etc. Now, you can teach them by asking them what they should call the items. For example, they should ask for ‘some’ milk, ‘a’ cake, etc. You can also ask children to perform some short dialogues in the game, such as: ‘I would like some peanuts’. This game, if conducted well, will be interesting for children in the EFL classrooms. Some of the alternative games can be learned from a course in teaching grammar that is required for you to become a teacher in a primary or an elementary school.
Learning by Asking Questions
Asking questions is the most crucial part of grammar teaching. However, children usually take a long time to get used to the word order, pronouns, etc.
You can call up a child ask her or him to ask grammar questions to the class. This game creates a bit of tension in the classroom as the students might be scared of what questions they might face, but if they are able to, they will get the motivation to learn more. Other than this, as a teacher you can identify the progress of your students. In a course in teaching grammar, you will learn the effective use of this game. Many of the EFL classrooms use this game as well as the others that we have mentioned above to teach grammar to children productively.
